HCA to CNA Bridge Program

Program Requirements

Sparrow Healthcare Education’s objectives are to provide the training and education to prepare students for the Nursing Assistant Certification through the Washington State Department of Health.  The HCA to CNA curriculum and training will prepare the student to provide care while maintaining the dignity, respect, and quality of life of the one in need. Upon completion of the program, the student will be equipped to care for the population in need in various settings.

The Bridge Program allows licensed HCA to test for CNA after an additional 24 Hours of training.

Upon successful completion of the clinical experience, students will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible for the Washington State Nursing Assistant Certification Examination.

Job Outlook

Overall employment of nursing assistants and orderlies is projected to grow 8 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. As the baby-boom population ages, nursing assistants and orderlies will be needed to help care for an increasing number of older patients.

Students must have adequate English language proficiency as evidenced by: (WAC 490-105-140)

    • -A high school diploma from a high school where English is the primary language; or
    • -A high school equivalency or General Education Development (GED) certificate; or
    • -A passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language; or the International English Language Testing System or a similar proficiency exam; or
    • -A satisfactory evaluation of the applicant’s foreign course work that has been produced by a reputable organization specializing in such evaluation; or
    • -A passing score on the Ability to Benefit test (ATB) that has been published by the American College Testing Service (ACT) or reviewed and approved by the American Council on Education (ACE)

 

  • Students must pass a background check prior to the clinical experience. A criminal record does not immediately disqualify you from Nursing Assistant training but may interfere and limit the clinical placement and future job opportunities.
  • Students must have a negative TB test or provide a negative chest x-ray within the last 24 months
  • Students must be able to physically perform the duties of a nursing assistant that include but not limited to: sitting, standing, lifting, moving, and transferring patients

Should the student’s enrollment be terminated or should the student withdraw for any reason, all refunds will be made according to the following refund schedule.
1. Sparrow Healthcare Education, LLC will refund all money paid if the applicant is not accepted. This includes instances where a starting class is canceled by Sparrow Healthcare Education.
2. Sparrow Healthcare Education, LLC will refund all money paid if the applicant cancels within five business days (excluding Sundays and holidays) after the day the contract is signed or an initial payment is made, as long as the applicant has not begun training.
3. The registration fee is a fee charged to process the student application and establish a student record system. The registration fee will be obtained by Sparrow Healthcare Education, LLC if the student cancels after the fifth business day after signing the contract or making an initial payment.
4. If training is terminated after the student enters classes, Sparrow Healthcare Education will retain the registration fee plus a percentage of the total tuition in the following table:

5. If a student completes and receives certifications, the below fees will be retained in addition to the percentage of total tuition.
• HIV/AIDS 7-Hour certification: $75.00
• AHA First Aid/CPR infant, child, adult: $50.00
6. When calculating refunds, the official date of a student’s termination is the last day of recorded attendance:
• When Sparrow Healthcare Education receives notice of the student’s intention to discontinue the training program;
• When the student is terminated for a violation of a published school policy which provides for termination; or,
• When a student, without notice fails to attend classes.
7. All refunds will be paid within 30 calendar days of the student’s official termination date.

Student records will be maintained by the school for 50 years. If the school closes, whether voluntary or involuntary, educations records or transcripts will be forwarded to the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board. Upon graduation, each student will be a given a copy of his or her transcript. Students may request copies by writing to Sparrow Healthcare Education with the student name, date of attendance, and number of copies requested. Each subsequent copy is $5.00.

Sparrow Healthcare Education does not offer placement assistance, however, Sparrow Healthcare Education will offer several job fairs during the year and also is a resource for facilities to look for recommendations on candidates to hire.

A test may be administered after each lesson to determine the amount of learning that has taken place. Test scores that fall below 70% are an indication that the necessary skills for entry into employment were not acquired. Students will have access to grading scores on the student portal. Students should make arrangements for extra practice, independent study, or tutoring if needed. Other methods of evaluation may include oral quizzes, homework, hands on skill evaluation, and individual and group projects.

A passing score of 70% is required on all quizzes and final exam before students can proceed to the clinical experience. Grades will be returned and posted on the student portal.

Students will be required to complete remedial training and complete additional course work if they do not receive a 70% on all exams. Students must pass the retake quizzes and final exam to receive a certificate of completion.

Incomplete grades are given when a student is unable to complete a course because of illness or other serious problems. An incomplete grade may also be given when a student does not turn in work or does not complete a test. If a student does not make arrangement to take a missed test, a failure grade will be given. A student who misses a final test must contact the instructor or Director within twenty-four hours of the test to arrange for a make-up examination.

Sparrow Healthcare Education records the daily attendance of each student. Records are available for student review. 100% attendance is required as this is part of the total hours of education required to receive a certification of completion.

Students are required to meet with the administrator if they have missed class and an agreed upon make-up time is established. Students can only miss one day of attendance (CNA classes)

Students who are going to be late to class or their clinical site must contact the instructor.

CNA students who are late to their clinical site or class two times will be subject to dismissal from the program.

Late is defined as any time after the start of class up to 15 minutes. After 15 minutes of class, the student is defined as absent. Students must stay the entire scheduled class/clinical hours.

Lessons and assignments missed can only be made-up with the approval of the instructor. There are no make-up days for clinical hours missed. Students are required to be in attendance.

Sparrow Healthcare Education requires that all students maintain a professional appearance at all times. Students will be required to wear scrub top and bottom on all lab and clinical days. An identification badge will be issued and must be worn at all times at school and at the clinical sites.

Students who do not come to the clinical site prepared with their identification badge and scrub uniform will be send home.

Shoes must be clean and in good repair. Shoes must be closed toed.

Fingernails must be clean and short. No nail polish or artificial fingernails (including gels) are allowed during the NAC program. This is an infection control and professional appearance issue.

Hair must be clean and color conservative. Long hair must be pulled back and secure out of face and eyes.

Tattoos must be covered to the best of your ability. No perfume, cologne, or scented lotions or sprays are allowed. No gum or tobacco are allowed.

Students must adhere to the clinical site’s policies.

Grooming and appearance standards will be strictly enforced at all times.

The following conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated:

  1. All forms of bias including race, religion, ethnicity, gender, disability, national origin, veteran status, and creed as demonstrated through verbal and/or written communications and/or physical acts.
  2. Sexual harassment including creating a hostile environment and coercing an individual to perform sexual favors in return for something.
  3. All types of proven dishonesty, including cheating, plagiarism, knowingly furnishing false information to the institution, forgery, and alteration or use of institution documents with intent to defraud.
  4. Intentional disruption or obstruction of teaching, administration, disciplinary proceedings, public meetings, and programs, or other school activities.
  5. Theft or damage to the school premises or damage to the property of a member of the school community on the school premises
  6. Students acts of criminal behavior that place any person in imminent danger are prohibited on all school grounds.
  7. Violation of the law on school premises. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of alcoholic beverages or controlled dangerous substances
  8. Violation of published school policies

Students may be dismissed from the school for the following reasons:

  1. Not adhering to the school’s rules, regulations, policies and code of conduct.
  2. Missing instructional time without meeting with the course instructor and Director
  3. Not maintaining the minimum grade requirements
  4. Not meeting financial responsibilities to the school.

The school director will notify the student in writing should it become necessary to dismiss the student. The dismissal letter will contain the date and reason for the dismissal. Prepaid tuition will be refunded according to the school’s refund policy.

Students dismissed from the school who request re-entry must put the request in writing to the school director. In cases where the student was dismissed for excessive absences, it may be possible to re-enter in the next scheduled session. In cases where the student was dismissed due to failure to maintain the minimum grade point average, it may be possible for the student to receive private tutoring and then reenter the school. In cases where the student was dismissed due to unacceptable conduct, the student may have to meet with the director before re-entering the school. The decision of the director is final and the student will receive a letter within five business days starting the decision.

Nothing in this policy prevents the student from contacting the Workforce Board (the state licensing agency) at 360-709-4600 at any time with a concern or a complaint. Students who have a complaint or who would like to appeal a dismissal must request in writing an appointment for an interview with the school director. The written request should include the following information:

  1. Student’s full name and current address
  2. A statement of the concern including dates, times, instructors, and if applicable, other students involved.
  3. Date of complaint letter and signature of the student
  4. Three dates in which the student would be available for a meeting with the school director. These dates should be within 10 business days of the complaint.

The school director will notify the student in writing of the appointment date in which the concerns or appeal should be addressed. Every effort will be made to bring an amicable closure to the concern. Should it be necessary, a panel of instructors will hear the concerns and will be asked to assist in bringing a resolution to concerns and/or appeals. The student will be notified in writing within five business days of the outcome of the meetings. Should the contract be canceled by either the student or the school the last date of attendance will be used as the date to calculate any refund in accordance with Sparrow Healthcare Education refund policy.
