Home Care Aide

Course Description

This is a Hybrid course approved to do partial online training with lab skills, mental health & dementia classes in person. Students can begin at any point during the month.

Training will provide DSHS certifications in Mental health, Dementia, Orientation and Safety, and core basic. This training is the minimum requirement for employment with home care agencies, assisted living facilities, adult family home caregivers and owners, individual state-contracted personal care workers, group homes, and any other direct care workers providing home or community-based services to the elderly or people with functional or developmental disabilities. We provide interactive, hands-on learning for our students.

Course Requirements

  1. The required course completion consists of 75 hours of classroom and lab instruction.
  2. Skills will be a pass/fail using the standards of the skills checklist evaluation as listed in the Fundamentals of Caregiving – 3rd Edition
  3. Demonstration of appropriate professional behavior of caregiver/resident and staff/co-worker interaction in class and clinical settings.

Learning Objectives

Orientation Training: 2 hours of introductory information orienting new workers to the care setting and job.
Safety Training: 3 hours of introductory information on safety practices.
Basic Training: 70 hours of training that combines the following:

  • Core basic training – Training covering the basic skills and information needed to provide hands-on personal care.
  • Population-specific training:
    • Mental Health
    • Dementia

Total clock hours: 75

Requirements for Home Care Aide Certification

  1. Complete the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS)
    fingerprint-based background check.
  2. Submit the completed Home Care Aide Application to the Department of
    Health, including the Employment Verification form, with 14 days of hire.
  3. Complete the 75-hour long-term care worker basic training, including
    Orientation and Safety training approved by DSHS
  4. Pass the home care aide knowledge and skills certification examinations.

You must complete all training within 120 calendar days of the date of hire. The deadline to become certified as a home care aide is 200 days from the date of hire. LTCWs who are limited-English proficient and obtain a DOH-issued provisional certification have 260 days from the date of hire. If you do not meet these time frames, you are no longer eligible to provide care. You must stop working until you receive a home care aide certification.

HCA Course

This course uses a combination of lectures with discussion and feedback, textbooks, workbooks, supplemental handouts, group and peer discussion, instructor-led laboratory/clinical exercises, multimedia materials, PowerPoint presentations, and guest speakers. Although every attempt will be made by the instructor to cover assigned material in class, the student is responsible for all materials listed in the syllabus.

The total cost of the HCA program is $450 which is divided between tuition, and registration fees.

Books: $20.00

Certification Test Fee $137 (paid to Washington State Department of Health)
HCA Washington State Application $85 (paid to the Washington State Department of Health)
